Start with where you sit.
Place the speaker where its front faces your usual listening position. A sturdy shelf or stand makes a better starting point than a hollow cabinet. Keep the front clear of books and other objects so sound has a direct path into the room.
Give the back some breathing room.
Start with a little space between the speaker and the wall, then listen. Move it in small increments. Corners often reinforce bass, while moving farther into the room can make it feel lighter. Let your ears choose the balance that works for your space.
Find the stereo triangle.
For two speakers, begin with roughly equal distances between the speakers and your seat. Turn the speakers slightly inward, then compare. You are looking for voices that feel centred and instruments that have room around them.
Live in the room.
Curtains, rugs, books and upholstered furniture all influence how a room responds. You do not need to turn your home into a studio. Try small changes, use a recording you know, and keep what makes listening more enjoyable.
A little attention changes what you hear.
