Listening rituals / FORMA JOURNAL

The art of doing just one thing.

Listening can be something we do with our whole attention. It starts with making a little room.

Make a small appointment with music.

Choose a moment that already exists in your day: the first coffee, the hour after work, the last few minutes before bed. A listening ritual works best when it belongs to your life. There is no perfect time, and no special equipment required to begin.

Choose before you sit down.

Deciding what to play is part of the pleasure. Pick one record or one collection, then let it run. Moving away from the skip button gives a piece of music time to reveal itself. A song you nearly passed over might become the reason you return.

Listen for something small.

Follow the bass line for a minute. Notice when a piano note finally disappears. Hear the breath before a phrase. This is not an exercise you have to get right. It is simply a way to discover a familiar recording again.

Leave some silence at the end.

Let the last note finish before reaching for the next thing. A few quiet seconds can make the room feel different. The ritual is complete when you decide it is, not when an algorithm finds something else to play.

A little attention changes what you hear.
